[머니조크] 떠나야 할 때

A CEO who was stepping down met with the new CEO of the company and gave him three envelopes. “Open these if you get into problems” he said. Six months later, sales took a downturn and he remembered the envelopes. He took out the first envelope. It read, "Blame your predecessor." The new CEO called a press conference and tactfully laid the blame at the previous CEO. The press responded positively, sales began to pick up and the problem was soon behind him. About a year later, the company was again experiencing a slight dip. The CEO quickly opened the second envelope. It said, “Reorganize.” So he did, the company quickly rebounded. After several profitable quarters, the company once again fell on difficult times. The CEO opened the third envelope. The message said, “Prepare three envelopes.”

퇴임하는 CEO가 신임 CEO에게 세개의 봉투를 내밀며 이렇게 말했다. “회사가 위험에 처했을 때 한 개씩 순서대로 열어보게나.” 6개월후 회사 실적이 떨어지자 신임 CEO는 봉투를 기억해내고는 첫번째 것을 열어봤다. 거기에는 “당신의 전임자를 탓하라”고 써있었다. 신임 CEO는 즉시 기자회견을 열어 현명하게 전임자의 실력을 비판했다. 이는 곧 언론에 적절히 먹혀 회사는 금방 매출이 올랐다. 1년여후 회사는 다시 부진을 겪었다. CEO는 두번째 봉투를 열었다. “구조조정” 봉투의 메시지대로 그는 실행했고 회사사정은 다시 나아졌다. 몇분기를 연속 수익을 올린 뒤 회사는 또 어려움에 빠졌다. CEO는 세번째 봉투를 열었다. 봉투에는 이렇게 적혀있었다. “세개의 봉투를 준비할 것.”
