Eight men have been at a mental hospital for a period of time and are being tested to find out how they are progressing in order for them to leave the institution. The doctor in charge takes them all into a room and with a ball pen draws a door on the wall and asks each one of them to try and open the door as part of the tests.
Seven of them rushed out and attempted to open the door on the wall. The doctor was disappointed with the results, but soon recognized the last one who was still sitting down and asked him why he didn't stand up and try to open the door with the others.
The eighth man replied, "Because I was holding the key to the door"
정신병동에 한동안 수용됐던 남자 여덟 명이 퇴원해도 좋을 만큼 병세가 호전됐는지를 살펴보기 위한 검사를 받고 있었다. 담당 의사는 검사의 일환으로 그들을 방 안으로 데리고 가서 볼펜으로 벽에 문을 그리고는 각자에게 문을 열어보라고 요구했다.
그들 중 일곱 명은 벽 위에 그려진 문으로 몰려가서 열어보려고 애를 썼다. 의사는 검사 결과에 실망했지만, 마지막 한 명이 여전히 자리에 앉아 있다는 것을 발견하고 그에게 왜 다른 사람들처럼 일어나서 문을 열려고 하지 않는지 물었다.
그러자 여덟 번째 남자가 말했다. "문 열쇠를 제가 쥐고 있었거든요."
