ImageView('','GisaImgNum_1','default','260'); 멋과 재능을 겸비한 세계 최고의 젊은이를 뽑는 ‘2009 미스터월드’ 세계대회가 80여개국 대표들이 참가하는 가운데 오는 9월18일부터 10월3일까지 서울ㆍ인천 등 국내 주요 도시에서 개최된다. 한국일보와 미스월드조직위원회(MWO) 공동 주최로 열리는 미스터월드대회는 건강미와 지성미를 겸비한 각국의 미남 후보들을 대상으로 탤런트 기질, 인내심, 봉사정신 등을 테스트하는 행사로 우승자에게는 상금 5만달러(약 6,300만원)가 수여된다. 격년제로 열리는 이 대회는 세계적인 스타 등용문으로 알려져 연예계 지망생은 물론 의사ㆍ은행원ㆍ청년사업가 등 전문직 종사자 사이에서도 큰 인기를 끌고 있다. 서울ㆍ인천ㆍ제주 등 주요 관광 명소에서 펼쳐질 이번 대회의 주요 경연종목은 태권도ㆍ워터스키ㆍ사격 등 운동경기 종목과 한식 요리 경연대회, 탤런트 쇼, 유방암과 기아 퇴치를 위한 기금 모금 캠페인 등으로 다채롭게 구성돼 있다. 또 미스월드들과 함께 하는 자선 패션쇼와 환경보호운동, 불우어린이들을 위한 기금 전달식 등도 준비돼 있다. 특히 10월3일 본선대회는 120여개국의 공중파 및 케이블TV를 통해 2시간 동안 생중계된다. 한국의 문화와 역사는 물론 주요 관광 명소와 한국의 대표 기업 등이 집중적으로 소개돼 내년부터 시작되는 ‘한국방문의 해’를 앞두고 관광 진흥과 국가 브랜드 홍보에 크게 기여를 할 것으로 보인다. 줄리아 몰리 MWO 회장은 “미스터월드대회는 세계에서 가장 바람직한 남성을 선발하는 행사로 참가자들은 스포츠맨십과 단결심ㆍ우정을 키워가며 체력의 한계에 도전하는 독특한 경험을 하게 될 것”이라고 말했다. 한편 MWO는 최근 이번 대회를 위해 홈페이지(www.mrworld.tv)를 새로 개설했으며 한국일보도 곧 한글 웹사이트를 오픈할 예정이다. 또한 한국일보는 미스터월드 세계대회에 출전할 한국 대표 선발전을 8월 중 개최하기로 하고 출전 자격과 일정 등 구체적인 참가 요강을 조만간 공지할 예정이다. The city will be playing host to the Mr. World 2009 competition for the first time from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3. Amid the backdrop of the scenery and culture of Korea, men from 80 countries will participate in adventure, sports and style competitions to find out who is worthy of the title of the world's most desirable man. The Mr. World competition is not just about finding the most handsome, charismatic or muscular man in the world, but a truly modern, all-around man. Throughout the competition, male contestants undergo a series of events that test their strength, stamina, mental agility and determination over two weeks. One of the most exciting and difficult events is the Extreme Sports Challenge. The contestants' stamina and physical endurance are pushed to new limits. This year, the men will have to conquer a well-known Korean landmark. The men's cooking skills are also put to the test in the Korean Cooking Challenge. Contestants will try to impress the judges with their skills in cooking Korean dishes. Only the top male contestants will make it to the Live Stage Final on Oct. 3, where they will be judged based on their performance, style and star quality. Winning the Mr. World title is honor enough, but the winner will also take home a cash prize of $50,000 and the opportunity to sign a lucrative contract. The finals are being held Oct. 3. The two-hour show will be broadcast live to around 100 countries, with an estimated audience of over one billion. ``Mr. World is a unique competition, the contestants are all competing against each other for the same title, but underlying this is an atmosphere of sportsmanship, unity and friendship which is what makes the competition such a wonderful experience for all those involved,'' said Julia Morley, chairperson of the Miss World Organization, the group behind the competition. The Miss World Organization is co-hosting the Mr. World competition with The Hankook Ilbo media group in Korea. The Korea Times is part of the Hankook Ilbo media group, the host of the Miss Korea pageant since 1957. ``I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mrs. Julia Morley and the Miss World Organization for giving us the opportunity to host the Mr. World 2009 contest, and I am confident we will build on this partnership in future years. We look forward to hosting a successful Mr. World 2009 and welcoming you all to the `Land of the Morning Calm','' said Chang Jae-ku, chairman of The Hankook Ilbo media group, in a statement. `James Bond-Style' Mr. World Mr. World, a biennial competition held since 1996, picks a ``James Bond-style'' contender who represents creativity, leadership and endurance. It incorporates various sports such as a marathon, mountain biking and water skiing in the contest, as well as fundraising activities. The Mr. World 2007 was held in China, where 56 contestants participated in a series of challenges. They ran up a two-kilometer mountain in the rainforest, engaged in a day of sports activities that even Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell described as ``extreme,'' and building a raft in 40 minutes. The contestants also took lessons from a tai chi master, and showed off kung fu skills at the Nan Shan Temple before a group of Shaolin monks. Spanish model and sommelier Juan Garcia was named Mr. World 2007 and will be visiting Seoul for the upcoming competition. ``Winning Mr. World has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. It has helped create so many opportunities in my life. This year's competition in Seoul looks to be the biggest men's event ever held and I wish all the contestants good luck,'' Garcia said.
